Work Philosophy
My work combines the use of two different theoretical orientations: Psychodynamic Perspectives and The Person-Centred Approach.
Psychodynamic Perspectives
Psychodynamic thinking is based on the convention that past experiences, especially those of childhood influence our present, both consciously and unconsciously. Psychodynamic theorists believe that many of people’s problems, or unhealthy ways of being in the world, are played at an unconscious level, or out of our conscious awareness. Thus the role of the therapist is to help the client to uncover the unconscious content in an attempt to alleviate people’s tension and suffering, whenever possible.
The Person-Centred Approach
The Person-centred approach suggests that clients would be better helped if they were encouraged to focus on their currect subjective understanding rather than some unconscious motive or someone else’s interpretation of the situation. In this case counsellors using this approach tend to work more in the here and now rather than in the here and then. According to this approach, the relationship between client and therapist on its own can have a healing and life changing effect to those who seek help.
My Working Approach
Like many Psychodynamic and Person-Centred practitioners, I believe that it is the client who knows what is best for them. Each client is unique and I value and respect people’s way of thinking, values and beliefs. As such I won’t tell you what to do, or give you advice. Rather, what I will endeavour to do is to work alongside you and accompany you through your journey of discovery. In so doing I will facilitate you to find your own solutions and consequently making your own choices.
